Dear all,

Please see details below of a post-doctoral research assistant position, based at Cardiff University. For further details or to make an application see

*Research Associate**
*Cardiff School of Biosciences**

A position is available for a Research Associate to contribute to research within a large interdisciplinary research team investigating how parasite and gut microbiota interactions structure parasite and pathogen communities, in a well-studied network of wild desert big horn sheep populations.

The successful candidate will require a postgraduate degree at PhD level in a subject area related to Ecology, Parasitology or Evolutionary Biology, and a portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience with established expertise within the field of computational biology – specifically statistical analysis of complex data using a range of techniques (e.g., mixed modelling, structural equation modelling, Bayesian techniques and network analysis). They will also be required to spend a minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 months in the US, based at Oregon State University – assisting the field team in the collection of data in the south-eastern California and Nevada deserts.
This field work is intense and often involves periods of camping in very hot environments.

The PDRA’s responsibility within the wider team will be to coordinate and analyse large-scale datasets, maintaining the parasite/pathogen data, and ensuring seamless integration with the larger meta-data collected by other members of the research team. Specifically, the PDRA will investigate (i) how connectivity between fragmented desert big horn sheep populations, (ii) population-level characteristics, and (iii) individual-level host traits impact parasite, pathogen and microbiota interspecific interactions and community structure. The PDRA will also work with the UK component of the research team (3 PIs and 2 PDRAs), to experimentally test how well model predictions fit the empirical data, including a 2-month stay at the University of Edinburgh and regular meetings with colleagues in Edinburgh and the University of Warwick.

This position is full-time, fixed term for 2 ½ years.

Salary £33,797 – £40,322 per annum (Grade 6). Please note that it is not expected that we will appoint above grade  6.32, currently £35,845 per annum.
